Fifty Per Cent Women’s Reservation, Implemented in 2029

Upgrade the Women’s Reservation Act from 33% to 50% of seats in the Lok Sabha and State Assemblies, with implementation in the 2029 general election — not deferred indefinitely behind a delimitation excuse.

The Demand

Half the country deserves half the seats. The 2023 amendment offered 33%, and then conditioned even that on a delimitation exercise that may not finish this decade. We demand 50% reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and State Assemblies, and we demand it active in the 2029 polls — full stop.

Why This Matters

Women are 48.5% of India’s population and roughly 15% of the Lok Sabha. No genuine policy of women’s welfare can survive a chamber that is structurally male.

Reservation is not a favour. It is the correction of a hundred-year exclusion. And the 33% number, frozen since the 1990s drafts, was never the ambitious option — it was the negotiated one.

Context

Rwanda, with 61% women legislators, is not the developmental superpower of our daydreams. It is a country that decided in 2003 that representation was a precondition of legitimacy, not a reward for it.

India has the legal architecture, the demographic case, and the legislative draft. What is missing is political will and a fixed effective date.

What Signing Does

The petition will be tabled at every Parliamentary Standing Committee that controls the amendment’s implementation calendar. Every signature is one more name on the demand for a chamber that looks like the country.
